Celebrating our Hayward Heroes!

On May 4th a grand celebration was held in Hayward for 39 heroes in our school community.  The Hayward Hero Dinner honors those who go above and beyond the call of duty to enrich the lives of Hayward’s students. These “Heroes” are volunteers, teachers, custodians, office workers, aides, and para-educators.

The Hayward Hero program was launched in 2008, and in 2009 the Hayward Education Foundation hosted a lunch for the hero award recipients and had 14 people in attendance. Each year this dinner had grown in popularity with more schools participating and more people attending. This year was certainly no exception! 38 school sites and 1 district wide program in Hayward participated, and 582 people attended the dinner.  Educators, community members, past and present Hero recipients, families and friends all showed up to honor these unsung heroes in our community.

Not only was this a sold-out event held at Meridian Hayward, a brand new airport hangar located at the Hayward airport; El Taquito Restaurant catered a delicious meal, and entertainment was provided by our DJ, Guy Schwartz. There were cash bars, wonderful auction prizes generously donated by community members and bay area companies, and a private jet parked in the hangar added a nice photo backdrop.

Our emcee, HUSD interim Superintendent Matt Wayne, recognized each school’s hero to a crowd trying to out cheer the others with chants, a blowhorn, and even a human tunnel. Two of Hayward’s Local Heroes, Capt. Bryan Matthews from the Hayward Police Department, and Ryan Volmer, from Hayward Fire Department, assisted in honoring the education heroes.
